What a sectional point repair is
A point repair, sometimes called a sectional liner or a spot repair, treats a short length of pipe, usually two to six feet, rather than the entire lateral. The trenchless version uses a short fiberglass or felt liner saturated with resin, positioned over the defect on an inflatable packer, pressed against the pipe wall, and cured in place. When the packer is removed, the damaged section has a new structural wall bonded inside it and the rest of the line is untouched. Where the defect cannot be lined, for instance a fully separated joint, the alternative is a small excavation at that exact spot, made possible because the camera and locator have already marked it to within inches.
When it is the right choice
The camera inspection decides this. A point repair makes sense when there is one identifiable defect, or two or three close together, and the pipe on either side is in good condition. Typical Huntington Beach examples:

The cured section has the same structural rating as a full liner and the same expected life.
